Enclosure: The 4,000HP & 5,000HP DC Locomotive Testing Load Bank is placed in a weather rated, heavy-duty, painted, mild steel enclosure with four heavy-duty lifting eyes provisions and two fork lift channels for easy lifting and maneuvering. The bottom air inlets, side air inlets and top air outlets are protected by expanded metal screens. Angled exhaust air hoods are provided for additional protection against the weather for permanent installations. Heat is discharged vertically. Our stationary towers will be used in this application. Access is allowed via multiple hinged doors and panels. Exterior paint color is off-white.

Dimensions: L = 179”; W = 72”; H = 101” (H = 139.625” with rain hoods).

Rating: Continuous duty.

Resistive Load Elements: Our WeldlessWeave™ resistors are made of stainless steel and used for this application. WeldlessWeave™ technology utilizes a continuous ribbon to eliminate all welds. By eliminating welds, hot spots are eliminated. To reduce the operating temperature, no through bolts are used, and a parallel element system reduces the watt density. Finally our resistors are designed to withstand vibration, and breakable parts like ceramics insulators are not used. All this will result in maximum operating life of our resistors.

Control Power: 120V, 1Φ, 60Hz internally supplied from the blower power, via step down transformer 480V/120V.

Controls: Mounted on the load bank behind the lockable, see-through, hinged door are the following:
  • One V DC digital meter with bright red LED display for high visibility.
  • One I DC digital meter with bright red LED display for high visibility.
  • One master ON/OFF 22mm switch.
  • One blower/s ON/OFF 22mm switch (soft start with timer delay).
  • One red, E-STOP, push button.
  • One 10 position Load Selector switch.
  • Air flow indicator lamps.
  • Over-temperature indicator lamp.

Contactors: Heavy duty, single pole, normally open DC contactors, capable of connecting and interrupting DC currents up to 1200ADC at 1500VDC [coil voltage to be 74VDC], will be used in this application to break the (+) side.

Mounting: Intended for permanent installation.

Customer Connections: Bus-bar type capable of accommodating 3x 535MCM cables; (+) & (-).

Blower Voltage: 460V, 3 Phase, 60Hz to be taken of the bus or to be externally supplied by customer.

Blower(s): 3 large single inlet, 20HP, high volume vane axial blowers.

Safety Features: Ground lug, fused motor starters, an over current sensor with a relay that would open all contactors and locomotive field contactor when over current is detected, and positive air flow sensors. Components that need to be heated in the winter shall be placed in a separate enclosure [within the main enclosure].

  • 50’ or 100' cable set with bus bars mating lugs
  • Remote and PLC-control capabilities are available 74VDC blower motors (power taken from locomotive)
